Update: As of August 2017, this site is no longer managed with Drupal. It is instead a static HTML/CSS site updated by hand. The reasons for this are explained in About this site. Drupal is still a very cool tool, just overkill for my present purposes. At this point, I'm keeping it as simple as possible.
Now that I'm using Drupal, the challenge is to stick to my original goal for the site, to provide a place to download music MP3s and PDFs. Drupal is so open-ended — offers so many possibilities — that I can easily go off into playing with all the cool tools and modules. So I need to stick with the basics.
I'm going to do as much as I can in core Drupal. I'm going to stick with core themes. The focus is on the content, not on the graphic design of the site. At least for now. (If I find I have a lot of time on my hands, I may come back to theming the site later.)
I also want the site to be easy to maintain, and the best way to do that is to keep it vanilla.
