The Lunar Glee Club, a nine-piece instrumental ensemble, was founded by bass players Dan Bilich and Dan Ladizinsky in 1983. Later rebranded as the Lunar Octet, this version of the group performed and recorded around the Ann Arbor–Detroit area through the mid-1990s.
These 1984 recordings of the Lunar Glee Club are from live performances at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were remastered from a stash of audio cassettes in the collection of Jon Krosnick. Some of this material was previously broadcast live on WCBN, the University of Michigan campus broadcasting network. Audio recordings copyright 1984, Lunar Glee Club.
Technical notes: The tape speed was slow, making the recording 33 cents (one-third semitone) flat. Tape speed and tuning have been corrected here. Also, the tape may have been encoded with Dolby B or C, with in a frequency boost in the upper midrange making it sound tinny and harsh. This harshness was corrected using EQ. The target output level was around -15 LUFS. Tools used included Ableton Live 11, iZotope RX10 and Ozone 11, TBProAudio DSEQ3, McDSP SA-3, SoundTheory GullFoss, Newfangled Audio Elevate (final limiter). and iZotope Tonal Balance Control 2 and Insight2.
