These tracks were recorded from a live WEMU radio broadcast from Depot Town, Ypsilanti, Michigan, at the summer 1984 WEMU Jazz Competition.
Technical notes. Tracks are in chronological order of performance. "Fix My Idol" was a "sound check" track — you can hear the sound engineer tweaking levels throughout. The two basses, the drum set, and percussion don't seem to have been miked directly — they sound like they are being picked up through the horn and conga mics, at least in the mix that was recorded here. In the audience you probably would have heard more bass direct from the onstage bass amps and the drums and percussion acoustically. Another problem was that the cassette tape ran out near the end of "Subway Tension", and you can hear a discontinuity at the end of the trumpet solo. On this track some of the music is missing, and you hear a crossfade to the out head on Side B of the cassette. Actually most of the out head was missing until the very last few bars, so I inserted a section of the in head from the beginning or the piece. (If anyone has a complete tape of this track, I would love to be able to copy it.) But technical issues aside, the energy of the performance and crowd response comes across. We didn't win the competition, by the way.
These tracks are digital transfers from a cassette of the WEMU radio broadcast, remastered using iZotope Ozone 11 but using Newfangled Elevate instead of Ozone Maximizer for final limiting.
Lunar Glee Club has evolved into Lunar Octet, with different lineups. Kalle Nemvalts left the band to move to California later in 1984. The band continues to record and perform internationally.
